The return of the Illawarra Sports Awards

The Illawarra is one of Australia’s great sporting regions.

From gold medal Olympians and Commonwealth Games talent, to world title heroes and elite rugby league, basketball and football stars, there’s a rich and proud history of success.

And it’s time to come together again with a showpiece event celebrating their achievements.

The Illawarra Academy of Sport and the Illawarra Mercury are at the forefront of sport in the region and are working together with their partners to deliver the Illawarra Sports Awards on Thursday 10 November 2022 – re-branded and re-energised.

A panel of experts will be formed to judge the best male and female athletes, as well as teams and para athletes while public voting will determine the popular People’s Choice Award.

Among several exciting and diverse categories, we’ll also be honouring the great community accomplishments and hard-working volunteers in our community, with special awards to recognise their commitment to Illawarra clubs and associations.

The Illawarra Sports Awards plays a very important role in honouring our sporting heroes and inspiring future ones. It preserves the great sporting history of the Illawarra and ensures the legacy created by our past sports stars is continued.

The Illawarra Sports Awards goals are to:

  • Promote the outstanding sports achievements and sporting heroes of our region
  • Recognise as role models the significant achievements of sporting individuals, teams, volunteers and administrators
  • Acknowledge and reward the achievements of sporting individuals and teams in their chosen sport
  • Promote partners as responsible corporate citizens helping to build our sporting communities in the Illawarra
  • Inspire the next generation of sportspeople, volunteers and administrators

The last Illawarra Sports Awards dinner was held in 2012. Since then the Illawarra Mercury has continued the tradition through announcing a Sports Person of the Year and People’s Choice Winner.

The Illawarra Sports Awards is bringing our community together to recognise and reward the achievements of those who have lifted themselves to success and taken us along with them.

The Illawarra can rightly claim to be one of Australia’s most active regions -a first-class sport and leisure destination with a pristine environment between the ocean and the mountains.

We enjoy a vibrant sporting culture centred around a wide variety of sports and few would argue that we punch above our weight when it comes to producing elite sportspeople. Sport is part of our culture, our lifestyle and our economy. That’s why the Illawarra Sports Awards is about celebrating our sporting stars, acknowledging the community heroes who make sport happen and inspiring the next generation of Illawarra sportspeople.

In the past three decades, the Illawarra Academy of Sport has produced

  • 22 Olympians
  • 21 Commonwealth Games representatives
  • 11 world champions
  • 75 senior national team representatives

Add to this the many other sporting champions from our region who did not pass through the Academy. We are a region that should stand proud!

Working with our local Councils, our State and Federal Governments, we can discover and nurture our future sports stars who will one day grace the stage at the Illawarra Sports Awards.

We’ve parochial leaders in our fields.

As the pioneer of the regional Academy model in Australian sport, the Illawarra Academy of Sport is a not-for-profit sporting organisation, that exists to provide localised training and education opportunities for talented young athletes, coaches and administrators across the Illawarra region.

The Illawarra Mercury continues to provide in-depth coverage of local, national and international sporting news and issues, as well as ongoing reporting and promotion of community and junior sport.

Presenting partner, Illawarra Credit Union has been serving the local community for 50 years. The Illawarra Credit Union has a deep commitment to the region, community and values that encourage citizenship, leadership and trust.

The Illawarra Academy of Sport, Illawarra Mercury and Illawarra Credit Union are proud to reignite and rebrand the Illawarra Sports Awards, so we can properly honour the region’s sporting achievements, congratulate our local sporting heroes and engender pride in our region.
